NSE & BSE F&O Lot Sizes 2026: Index and Stock Contracts, Upcoming Revisions and Contract Values
Updated 1 November 2026
A lot is the fixed number of units in one futures or options contract. You can't trade half a lot, so the lot size sets the smallest position you can take, and with it how many rupees each point of movement is worth. Every table on this page is built from the exchange contract master, last updated 01 Nov 2026.

How lot sizes are set
Lot sizes exist to keep each contract within a target value range. Under SEBI's October 2024 measures, index derivative contracts must be worth at least ₹15 lakh when they are introduced, and exchanges review lot sizes periodically against the underlying's price. Stock derivatives are reviewed the same way against each stock's price.
- When the underlying rises a lot, the contract becomes too large and the lot size is cut.
- When it falls, the contract becomes too small and the lot size can be raised.
- The change applies from a series named in the exchange circular. Contracts already trading usually keep their old lot size until they expire, which is why two lot sizes can coexist.
From lots to rupees
contract value = price × lot size ₹ per point = lot size × number of lots risk per lot = |entry − invalidation| × lot size NIFTY future at 25,000, lot 65: contract value = ₹16,25,000; ₹65 per index point stock at ₹1,400, lot 500: contract value = ₹7,00,000; ₹500 per ₹1 move
The position size calculator does this for any instrument, and the expiry-day ELM calculator adds the extra margin on short index options on expiry day.
Margin isn't contract value
You don't pay the full contract value to hold a futures position or a short option. You post margin: SPAN margin (the worst likely one-day loss, computed by the exchange) plus exposure margin, plus anything extra your broker adds. Margin is usually a fraction of contract value and changes daily with volatility. Long options are different: you pay the full premium upfront. For a short-option position, margin can rise sharply on expiry day because of the additional Extreme Loss Margin.
Stock F&O is physically settled
Stock futures, and stock options that are in the money at expiry, settle by delivery. If you hold one lot of an in-the-money call to expiry, you receive the full lot's shares and must pay for them. Holding a short future to expiry means delivering the shares. Index derivatives are cash settled, so this only applies to stocks. Close or roll stock positions before expiry unless you intend to take or give delivery.Stock F&O lot sizes: all 218 stocks
Every stock with NSE futures. Where a revision is already listed for a later series, the new lot and the month it starts are shown in brackets.

Always confirm with the exchange
Lot sizes here are checked against the exchange contract master and refreshed when it changes, but your broker's order window and the NSE/BSE circulars are the final word. Mid-series changes, corporate actions (splits, bonuses) and new inclusions can change a lot size at short notice.Frequently asked questions
- What is the NIFTY lot size?
- 65 units per contract in the current series, per the exchange contract master. Lot sizes are revised periodically, so check the latest exchange circular before trading a new series.
- What is the Bank Nifty lot size?
- 30 units per contract in the current series.
- Why do lot sizes change?
- Exchanges keep contract values within a set range. When an index or stock rises a lot, its lot size is reduced so one contract doesn't become too large, and when it falls the lot can be raised.
- When does a new lot size take effect?
- On the date in the exchange circular, usually from a specific series onward. Contracts listed with the new lot size can trade alongside existing ones with the old size until those expire.
- Are stock F&O contracts settled in shares?
- Yes. Stock futures and in-the-money stock options held to expiry are physically settled: you deliver or receive the lot's shares. Index derivatives are cash settled.
- How much margin does one lot need?
- Margin is a fraction of contract value, set by the exchange's SPAN and exposure margin and your broker's own rules. It changes daily with volatility. Your broker's margin calculator gives the real figure.
