Why there's no Bank Nifty weekly expiry

Bank Nifty used to have weekly options and was for years the most actively traded weekly contract in India. Under SEBI's October 2024 measures, each exchange may offer weekly options on only one benchmark index. NSE kept NIFTY, so Bank Nifty's weekly contracts were discontinued in November 2024 and only monthly and quarterly contracts remain. On BSE the weekly index is SENSEX. Much of the short-dated activity that used to sit in BANKNIFTY moved to NIFTY and SENSEX weeklies. The weekly expiry guide covers the full set of rules.

Rollover

Because BANKNIFTY futures are monthly, positions are rolled into the next month in the last week or so before expiry. Near-month open interest falls while next-month open interest rises, which can look like heavy unwinding if you only watch the near month. The open interest guide shows how to combine the months and read rollover percentage and cost.

On expiry day

  • Short BANKNIFTY options expiring that day carry an additional 2% Extreme Loss Margin. With a 30-unit lot and a 55,000 strike, that is ₹33,000 extra per lot. Work out yours with the ELM calculator.
  • Calendar-spread margin benefits are withdrawn on the expiring leg.
  • Near-the-money options become very sensitive to small index moves in the final hours, and out-of-the-money options lose their remaining time value.
  • In-the-money options are exercised automatically and settled in cash.

Before each BANKNIFTY expiry

  1. Confirm the date against the NSE circular, especially in holiday-heavy months.
  2. Decide which positions to roll, close or let expire, a few days ahead.
  3. Have the extra expiry-day margin in the account before the session opens.
  4. Check the lot size of the series you are rolling into on the BANKNIFTY page.
